Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys from the 1971 through 2008 football seasons, is one of the most uniquely situated stadiums in the United
States. It is within a tight loop of freeways formed by TX 183, Loop 12, and TX 114. See it while you can, however, because the clock is ticking
on Texas Stadium.
In January 2007 the city of Irving announced that Texas Stadium will be torn down as soon as the Cowboys vacate at the end of the 2008 season and
the site will be transformed into an urban district with hotels, civic
buildings, residences and a park, with the first phase open by 2012.
These freeways were completed in the early through late 1960s and the freeway interchanges in particular exhibit flagrant substandard 1960s design,
especially the tight-radius cloverleaf ramps along TX 183. It is clear that a lot of construction was done "on the cheap" when these freeways were built.
TxDOT has plans for major improvement of these freeways and interchanges. The first major work is scheduled to begin in 2007 (as of August 2006)
with reconstruction and expansion of Loop 12 from just south of TX 114 to I-35E. The work zone is shown in the view of image 6. There are also plans to rebuild the interchanges
and TxDOT recently (as of Jan 2007) received bids for final engineering on the major expansion. So the freeway work will probably occur sooner
rather than later, and by sooner I mean less than 10 years.

Looking south with the Loop 12/Texas 114 interchange in the foreground. Notice that connecting movements between Loop 12 and TX 114
must be made via the frontage roads, which is a signalized intersection.

Looking down and toward the east on the TX 183/Loop 12 intersection. This cloverleaf design interchange is particularly antiquated.

is scheduled to begin construction in 2007 to expand it to 10 lanes in a 4-2(reversible)-4 configuration.
