Texas Stadium was imploded on April 11, 2010. In terms of freeways, no other stadium in the United States in the past or presently existing is as closely
surrounded by freeways. Most points of the stadium perimeter were within 500 feet of a freeway, except the north side which was a little further.
1971 was the first season for the Cowboys at Texas Stadium, and the 2008 season was the last.
In January 2007 the city of Irving announced that Texas Stadium would be demolished relatively quickly after the Cowboys departure.
As of May 2010, it appears that there are no firm plans for development of the property and any redevelopment activity will surely need
to wait for a strong economic upturn. In the meantime, TxDOT has leased the property to be used as a staging area for the construction
work on the surrounding freeways, the "Diamond Interchange" project underway since 2009.
Modernization and expansion of the freeways around the site of the former Texas Stadium is long overdue.
These freeways were originally completed in the early 1960s through 1971 and the freeway interchanges in particular exhibit flagrant substandard design,
especially the tight-radius cloverleaf ramps along TX 183. It is clear that a lot of construction was done "on the cheap" when these freeways were built.
The stadium is gone, but the freeways will be better than ever when the Diamond Interchange project is complete.

must be made via the frontage roads, which is a signalized intersection.

Looking down and toward the east on the TX 183/Loop 12 intersection. This cloverleaf design interchange is particularly antiquated.

is scheduled to begin construction in 2007 to expand it to 10 lanes in a 4-2(reversible)-4 configuration.
