Quick Info
TX 183 is the main route to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport from Dallas and Fort Worth. The route multiplexes with TX 121 west of DFW Airport in Bedford and Hurst, and the TX 121 designation is more widely used on that section. TX 183 was originally constructed as a two-lane highway in 1944 and was slowly upgraded in a piecemeal process over time. The designation and construction of DFW Airport in the late 1960s provided the push to upgrade TX 183 to freeway standards for its entire length, and freeway status was achieved in 1973. However, the freeway was built to very low standards in Irving and the section west of DFW Airport is also fairly basic. There are plans for a massive rebuild including toll lanes. As of 2008, it is expected that the project will be substantially privatized but there is no timetable for construction. Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys from 1971 to 2008, is alongside the freeway in Irving and is planned to be demolished in 2009. TX 183 also featured another historical oddity which was demolished in 1988: the tunnel under the main runway at the Greater Southwest Airport.
Historical information about TX 183 west will be added in the future.
